As the end of summer approaches, Nassau County, New York, walking and running enthusiasts are gearing up for the annual AHRC Walk, which will take place on Sunday, September 14—rain or shine! More than 1,000 eager people are expected to turn out to support area children and adults living with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Those familiar with the annual event will see something brand new among the fund-raising festivities this year: the 5K Fun Run. Open to runners of all levels and abilities, the un-timed 5K Fun Run will start at 8:30 in the morning before the usual 3-mile AHRC Walk, which starts at 10:30.
“Moving ahead, leaving no one behind.”
True to the AHRC Walk’s slogan, the Walk is wheelchair-accessible and open to those of any fitness level. The day promises to be a fun-filled celebration for children and adults of any ability, as well as their families, friends, and supporters.
Hosted by the Nassau County AHRC Foundation with the kind sponsorship of several area businesses, the AHRC Walk and 5K Fun Run also relies on the hundreds of local donors supporting the event’s participants. So far this year, people have raised over $30,000 for the cause!
The cause, of course, is supporting individuals living with developmental and intellectual disabilities. AHRC Nassau strives to help these people realize their full potential through a variety of services, including community integration, pre-vocational training, and employment assistance. It also provides numerous avenues of support for the families of those challenged by disabilities. AHRC also offers local businesses a range of quality services, including cleaning, recycling, and landscaping, among others. By collaborating with area businesses, the organization provides opportunities for people with disabilities to gain exposure to genuine work environments and learn valuable skills.
